Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) CEO Adrian Mardell has announced his decision to step down, an official statement released by the company said.

Mardell, who has led the Tata Motors Ltd-owned luxury carmaker for the past three years, has been with JLR for 35 years.

The company said a decision regarding his successor will be announced in due course.

Mardell’s departure comes amid industry-wide leadership churn across Europe, as automakers navigate regulatory changes, technological shifts, and global trade uncertainty.

Earlier this year, JLR faced elevated US tariffs that temporarily disrupted its exports to the American market, one of its largest, where it does not operate manufacturing facilities.

Shipments resumed under reduced tariff rates after a month-long pause, Reuters reported.

Under Mardell’s leadership, JLR initiated a major brand transformation, repositioning Jaguar as a high-end electric marque.

The strategy, announced in late 2024, was backed by a high-profile advertising campaign featuring the Jaguar Type 00 electric concept car.

While the rebranding generated buzz, it was met with criticism and a subsequent decline in sales across Europe.

Dealers and customers also expressed concern over the pause in new Jaguar model production ahead of the next-generation EV rollout.

Despite the setbacks, Mardell oversaw JLR’s strongest profit performance in a decade and led efforts to reduce the company’s debt by £5 billion.

The success of the Defender and Range Rover lineups played a key role in JLR’s recovery, with the company now targeting a 10% profit margin by 2026.

Jaguar Land Rover became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors in June 2008, when Tata acquired the brands from Ford Motor Company for $2.3 billion.
