Amul to enter Europe this month, starting with Spain

Amul will launch its brand of dairy products in Europe, beginning with Spain, by the end of this month, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) managing director Jayen Mehta said.

Mehta made the announcement on Monday at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade’s (IIFT)’s 75th convocation ceremony, where he was the chief guest. About 650 students were conferred degrees at the ceremony.

He emphasized the importance of dairy cooperatives in strengthening rural India’s growth prospects and encouraged IIFT graduates to pursue careers in international business, highlighting the global successes of Indian firms such as Amul.

Last month, while delivering the 11th Dr Verghese Kurien memorial lecture, Mehta had said that Amul was ready to expand into Europe, which would mark a historic moment for the company.

The dairy brand debuted in the US market in March. Amul’s four milk variants, including Amul Taaza, Amul Gold, Amul Shakti, and Amul Slim n Trim. are available in the US market. Amul’s cheese and ice cream products are available in Canada.

Amul, managed by GCMMF, operates 107 dairy plants and offers 50 products nationwide, achieving a turnover of $952 million last fiscal year.

During IIFT’s convocation, Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal, in a virtual address, told the graduates to keep abreast of new trade agreements to help realize the nation’s ambition of a ‘Developed India’ with a $2 trillion trade target.

Goyal also urged the IIFT students to pursue careers in emerging sectors such as telecom, semiconductors, deep-sea exploration, and space technology.
