Bata India Ltd has appointed Sanjay Rao as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, handing the footwear retailer to a former Nike executive as it looks to revive growth and sharpen its retail strategy.

Rao will succeed Gunjan Shah, who will step down after completing a five-year term leading the company. Rao’s appointment will take effect on 24 August. Bata India shares rallied after the announcement, rising as much as 18% intraday on 18 June.

Rao joins Bata India from Nike, where he most recently served as Senior Director, Nike Retail, overseeing the France and Benelux markets. He brings more than two decades of retail and consumer leadership experience across India, South Asia, China and Europe.

The appointment comes at a sensitive point for Bata India. The company remains one of India’s best-known footwear brands, but growth has been uneven as competition has increased across price points. Sportswear brands, fast-fashion retailers, regional footwear makers and online-first labels have all taken share in categories where Bata once had a clearer advantage.

The market reaction suggests investors see Rao’s appointment as a potential reset. His background at Nike gives Bata a leader with experience in modern retail operations, brand-led merchandising and international consumer markets.

Gunjan Shah took charge in 2021 after Sandeep Kataria moved to a global role at Bata. During Shah’s tenure, the company focused on casualization, sneakers, franchise expansion and premium formats, while also navigating pandemic-era disruption and changing consumer behavior.

The challenge for Rao will be to restore consistent growth while defending Bata’s mass-market base. India’s footwear market is large but fragmented, and customers are increasingly split between value purchases, fashion-led impulse buying and performance footwear.

Bata has a presence across school shoes, formal footwear, casuals, sneakers and comfort categories.

Rao’s international exposure may help Bata rethink how it uses stores. Nike’s retail strategy globally has focused on sharper consumer segmentation, experience-led stores, stronger digital integration and product storytelling.

Investors will watch whether the new CEO accelerates store renovation, franchise-led expansion, sneaker launches, digital commerce and premium product lines. The company will also need to manage costs carefully because discretionary consumption has been uneven and footwear demand remains sensitive to pricing.

The appointment also fits a broader trend of Indian consumer companies bringing in leaders with global retail experience. As India’s middle class becomes more brand-conscious and digitally influenced, old distribution-led models are being supplemented by product design, consumer data, omnichannel execution and faster inventory cycles.
