Classic Legends launches BSA Gold Star in India
Relaunched in the UK in 2021, the BSA Gold Star 650 has won fans in Europe and beyond, with upcoming launches in the US, Australia, and Japan
Mahindra group subsidiary Classic Legends that owns iconic British motorcycle brand BSA launched the Gold Star 650cc on Thursday, the nation’s independence day.
Established in 1861, the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) is the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer and enjoys a strong fan following among bikers worldwide.
The BSA Gold Star 650cc will be available in India for ₹2.99 lakh (about $3,560), and will look to disrupt the 500-800cc bike market segment in the country.
“Bringing BSA to India is about sharing a piece of world motorcycling history with India. That indomitable spirit of BSA, a brand built in the fires of battle, is imbued in the new Gold Star that I hope all of you have a chance to experience,” Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra said.
The original Gold Star, born in Britain in 1938, set numerous speed records and dominated racing circuits, becoming the ‘gold standard’ for performance motorcycles of its time, according to the company.
The BSA Gold Star 650 was relaunched in the UK in 2021 and has since become popular among bike lovers in Europe, Turkey, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
After India, BSA now has plans to enter the US, Australia, and Japan soon.
“The BSA Gold Star embodies the essence of motorcycling excellence,” Anupam Thareja, co-founder of Classic Legends Pvt. Ltd, said. “Every detail, from the tank’s iconic shape to the engine’s big single character, has been meticulously crafted to capture the spirit of BSA’s golden age while delivering the performance, reliability, and innovation that define a global brand.”
Available in six colors, such as the classic ‘Silver Sheen,’ the Gold Star motorcycle features a 652cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. It offers top-of-its-class power with 55Nm torque and 45.6 horsepower, and includes Brembo brakes with dual-channel ABS, durable aluminum Excel rims for improved performance, and Pirelli tires.
Gold Star is crafted with a British-led design by Redline Studios and engineering by Ricardo, complemented by engine expertise from the Technical University of Graz. This collaboration blends British engineering heritage with global technical excellence, the company said.
The bike’s rider-focused design includes easily adjustable rear shocks for personalized comfort and is equipped with a 12V socket and USB charging port.
Classic Legends entered into a 50:50 joint venture with Murugappa Group’s Tube Investments of India earlier this month for using the BSA Marks for motorcycles, their parts and accessories, clearing the way for the launch of BSA motorcycles in India. The Murugappa Group owns the trademark for BSA for cycles.
Classic Legends is the parent company of Jawa and Yezdi brands, and currently manufactures 60,000 motorcycles annually at its Pithampur facility in Madhya Pradesh.
With the introduction of the BSA this fiscal year, the company aims to increase production to 100,000 units annually at this location, which has a total capacity of 500,000 units per year.
