Google plans $6 billion data center in Andhra Pradesh
If finalized, the project would mark Google’s first data center investment in India and rank among the largest in Asia by both capacity and capital outlay
Google may invest about $6 billion to set up a large-scale data center and supporting power infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, Reuters reported, citing government officials familiar with the matter. The facility, to be built in the port city of Visakhapatnam, would include a $2 billion renewable energy component to power operations.
If finalized, the project would mark Google’s first data center investment in India and rank among the largest in Asia by both capacity and capital outlay. Officials said it would also be part of a broader multi-billion-dollar expansion of Google’s data infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
Alphabet Inc is expected to spend up to $1 billion in the first two years to establish core capacity, with regular updates being provided to the Prime Minister’s Office, the report said.
Andhra Pradesh’s IT minister Nara Lokesh confirmed that discussions with Google are in advanced stages and a site in Visakhapatnam has already been identified. He said the company is currently awaiting internal approvals.
Lokesh also noted that a 350-MW data center by Sify Technologies is in the pipeline, and that Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a destination for global tech investment through its growing digital and financial infrastructure.
