Gopal Vittal named acting chair at global telecom body GSMA

Bharti Airtel Ltd vice chairman and managing director Gopal Vittal has been appointed acting chair at global telecom body GSMA Board following the resignation of José Maria Álvares-Pallete as chairman and CEO of Telefónica, the company said on Monday.

“By virtue of this resignation, he (Álvares-Pallete) is no longer able to continue in the position of the chair of the GSMA,” the company said in a statement.

Vittal, who was recently re-elected as the deputy chair of the GSMA Board, has been an active member and has served in a key role during his term in 2019-20.

The GSMA represents the global telecommunications industry, comprising over 1,100 companies from various sectors, including telecom service providers, handset makers, software companies, and internet firms.
