Paypal gets RBI nod to operate as crossborder payment aggregator
The payment firm can now deepen its role in India’s booming cross-border trade—helping local sellers reach new markets, meet rising global expectations, and plug into its vast global payments network
PayPal’s India arm, PayPal Payments Pvt. Ltd, has received the Reserve Bank of India’s in-principle approval to operate as a payment aggregator for cross border exports.
The approval comes as India’s exports touched nearly $74 billion in April, and the push for seamless, secure cross-border transactions is only getting stronger.
“The in-principle approval reflects the strength of India’s regulatory vision and the progress toward seamless, secure cross-border transactions. As India grows into a global export hub, PayPal remains committed to empowering Indian businesses with trusted digital payment solutions,” Nath Parameshwaran, senior director for government relations at PayPal India, said.
Already active in India for over a decade, PayPal has been quietly expanding its toolbox—rolling out features such as PayPal Checkout, Invoicing, and no-code tools to help sellers scale globally without the usual tech headaches.
“We’ve helped Indian freelancers and small businesses participate in global commerce for years,” Abid Murshed, head of sales at the firm, said. “This approval lets us do that within a more structured, secure framework.”
