South Delhi tops Kantar’s list of FMCG hotspots
IT hub Bengaluru leads the country in spending on premium FMCG products, with an average cost of ₹211 per kg—surpassing all other cities, none of which crosses ₹195 per kg.
South Delhi leads the country in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) consumption, while West Delhi records the highest annual household spending on packaged goods, according to Kantar’s latest FMCG Pulse report.
The report, published by Kantar Worldpanel and gathered by examining purchasing behavior across 157 urban micro-clusters, provides insights into consumer behavior in FMCG purchases across India.
The report showed that households in West Delhi localities such as Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri, Sagarpur, and Vikaspuri spend an average of Rs39,325 each year on FMCG consumption.
This figure is more than double the national average.
In contrast, households in South Delhi areas like Okhla, Kalkaji, Lajpat Nagar, and Bhogal purchase about 240 kilograms of FMCG products annually, which is twice the national average in terms of volume.
Even though there are differences in spending and quantity, both clusters show a strong preference for home-cooked food and bottled beverages.
In South Delhi, the annual household consumption includes 45 liters of edible oil and 17 kg of salt, which is slightly higher than city averages.
The same households consume twice the Delhi average of basmati rice and around 20 liters of bottled soft drinks per year, the report said, noting that this combination of staples and beverages is linked to taste preferences rather than health considerations.
In West Delhi, households also show high demand for basmati rice and spices, along with an annual average of Rs1,700 spent on salty snacks.
People in that cluster spend about twice the city norm on sauces and ketchups, and expenditure on bottled soft drinks is 1.9 times higher than the Delhi average.
According to the data, there is a strong inclination toward flavor-focused, home-prepared food in this region as well.
Meanwhile, IT hub Bengaluru leads the country in spending on premium FMCG products, with an average cost of ₹211 per kg—surpassing all other cities, none of which crosses ₹195 per kg.
In Mumbai, the Greater Dharavi-Santacruz cluster—which includes areas like Dharavi, Bandra East, Santacruz East, and Khar East—has households that make an average of 233 shopping trips annually. The average spend per visit is Rs93, with only 541 grams purchased each time.
These figures represent the lowest spend and quantity among metro clusters. The report, however, noted that smaller residential spaces in the area may influence frequent, lower-volume purchases.
In comparison, urban Indian households outside this cluster make 128 FMCG shopping trips every year, while the average Mumbai household records about 135 such visits.
The report did not include wheat flour (atta) purchases to avoid regional consumption disparities and focused on broader trends across metro markets.
