Uber on Tuesday said it has partnered with Refex Green Mobility to deploy 1,000 electric vehicles (EVs) across major Indian cities by next year.

The initiative is part of Uber’s plan to achieving 100% emission-free rides globally by 2040.

Electric four-wheelers will be incorporated into Uber’s platform in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai as part of the collaboration, a statement said.

“Uber is committed to accelerating the shift to zero-emission mobility in India, and this partnership with Refex eVeelz is a significant step in that direction,” said Aditya Kapoor, head of supply and electrification at Uber India and South Asia.

Refex Green Mobility, which is a subsidiary of Refex Industries Ltd operating under the brand Refex eVeelz, manages a fleet of nearly 1,300 company-owned electric four-wheelers.

Chief of staff Sachin Navtosh Jha said the partnership with Uber would contribute to reducing urban carbon emissions and be in line with India’s sustainability goals.

Apart from this, Uber has also expanded its Uber Green service in several Indian cities, allowing riders to book all-electric vehicles. This service is available in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata and has a presence in over 100 cities worldwide.
