Britain’s King Charles, 75, has been diagnosed with cancer and has commenced treatment, Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Monday.

The Palace didn’t specify the type of cancer in the statement, but said that it wasn’t related to his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate.

The monarch has been advised by doctors to take a step back from public duties, but will continue his duties as head of state, the statement added.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” said Buckingham Palace.

The statement also mentioned that the king was grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention during his recent procedure, and that he was “wholly positive” about his treatment.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” Buckingham Palace shared.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi took to X to share his reaction to the announcement.

“I join the people of India in wishing speedy recovery and good health to His Majesty King Charles III,” he posted.

The announcement also brought on an outpouring of well wishes from other world leaders.

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau also took to X to share his message to the king.

“I, like Canadians across the country and people around the world, am thinking of His Majesty King Charles III as he undergoes treatment for cancer. We’re sending him our very best wishes – and hoping for a fast and full recovery,” he said.

British prime minister Rishi Sunak also wished the king a “full and speedy recovery”.

“I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well,” he shared.

American president Joe Biden, whose son Beau passed away from brain cancer in 2015, also reacted to the news.

“Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage.

Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery,” he shared.
