Mithun Chakraborty to be conferred with Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Bollywood actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty will be conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest recognition in the field of cinema, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The award will be presented to Chakraborty at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on 8 October, Vaishnaw said, lauding the actor for his remarkable cinematic journey which inspires generations.

“Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema. To be presented at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on Oct 8, 2024,” his post said.

Chakraborty will be the 54th recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, instituted in 1969 in honour of the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke.

Phalke had directed India’s first feature film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in 1913.

Others who have received the award include Prithviraj Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, BR Chopra and Yash Chopra.

Actor Waheeda Rehman received the award in 2021.

Chakraborty debuted with the Mrinal Sen-directorial, Mrigayaa (1976), for which he won the national film award for best actor.

The veteran actor shot to fame and became a household name after his 1982 film, ‘Disco Dancer’, a huge success at the box-office.

He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X
