Green metals on the table as India, UAE look to deepen industrial ties
The development followed a meeting between steel and heavy industries minister HD Kumaraswamy, and UAE’s economy minister Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri
India and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to collaborate on developing high-grade steel and aluminum as part of a wider effort to build sustainable industrial capacity and resilient supply chains under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Under the partnership, which was firmed up during a meeting between India’s steel and heavy industries minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and UAE economy minister Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, both sides identified steel and aluminum as key pillars of future cooperation, especially in sectors such as automotive, transport, and defense.
“India and UAE can be strong partners in green steel production and sustainable industrial growth. UAE’s role will be crucial in helping India achieve its 300 million ton (mt) steel production target by 2030, especially in areas of raw material security and energy-efficient processes,” Kumaraswamy said.
He added that there is strong synergy in co-developing premium materials vital for next-generation manufacturing. The UAE’s clean energy ecosystem and robust trade networks are expected to play a significant role in the partnership.
During his visit, Kumaraswamy inaugurated the international offices in Dubai for three Indian public sector companies: SAIL, NMDC, and MECON. These offices are intended to expand business outreach and industrial partnerships in the region.
SAIL, which currently procures 2.5 million tons of limestone annually from Ras Al Khaimah-based Stevin Rock LLC, plans to scale up imports as it increases its steel production from 20 to 35 mt. Kumaraswamy invited Ras Al Khaimah to collaborate on infrastructure and energy projects.
NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, is looking to expand its global footprint by sourcing minerals and forging strategic partnerships abroad. MECON, meanwhile, will support steel, oil and gas, and urban development projects in the Gulf through its new regional office.
To deepen cooperation, Kumaraswamy proposed setting up a dedicated working group under CEPA to explore new trade opportunities, improve logistics, and frame long-term strategies.
“India views UAE not merely as a trade partner, but as a strategic ally in redefining the global industrial landscape,” the minister said.
