Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Monday for the 19th group of 20 (G20) Summit.

As he landed in the Latin American country, he shared a post on X: “Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to take part in the G20 Summit. I look forward to the Summit deliberations and fruitful talks with various world leaders.”

India had held the presidency of the G20 from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023, when Brazil took over.

Before his departure for the summit last week, Modi had said that he looked forward to meaningful discussions aligning with India’s vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

Modi said India’s successful presidency elevated the G20 and mainstreamed the priorities of the Global South into its agenda.

He added that Brazil has built upon India’s legacy this year.

During his visit, Modi will join leaders from the Caribbean partner countries for the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit.

On Sunday, Modi visited Nigeria in the first leg of his three-nation tour, during which Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu conferred his nation’s “Grand Commander of the Order of Niger” award on Modi “for his statesmanship and stellar contribution to fostering India-Nigeria ties.”

Modi was on a two-day state visit to the African country on 17-18 November.

During his meeting with Modi, Tinubu acknowledged India’s efforts to amplify the concerns of developing countries through the Voice of the Global South summits.
The two leaders agreed to work together to meet the development aspirations of the Global South.

The leaders agreed there was immense potential for collaboration in the fields of trade, investment, education, energy, health, culture, and people-to-people ties.

The last meeting between the leaders took place during the G20 Summit in New Delhi last year.

Alluding to Nigeria’s membership of the International Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance, the Prime Minister invited President Tinubu to join other pro-planet green initiatives launched by India.

Both leaders signed three deals on cultural exchange, customs cooperation, and survey cooperation.

After the G20 summit in Rio, Modi will leave for Guyana.

Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the South American country in more than 50 years.

The Indian Prime Minister is visiting the country at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali.

Modi will address their Parliament and pay respects to one of the oldest Indian diaspora, who migrated more than 185 years ago.
