The government is working on an initiative to launch a “Made in India” seal to promote local brands in global markets, similar to “Made in Japan” or “Made in Switzerland” tags—”which are considered seals of excellent quality and high product standards.”

The “Made in India” seal will aim to enhance global perception of Indian products, The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported, citing an unidentified official aware of the government’s plans.

The plan is aligned with country’s ‘Made in India’ initiative that emphasizes on developing domestic manufacturing capabilities and encouraging the use of domestically produced products.

When one thinks of “Made in Switzerland,” one correlates the brand with excellent quality of watches, chocolates, or banking systems, PTI cited the official as saying.

“Similarly, committee members are discussing how to promote Indian-made products or services under the “Made in India” seal. Indian textiles, where the country exudes unmatched strength, or similar products where Indian brands are considered valuable, are being considered,” the officer told PTI said.

A high-level committee has been appointed to discuss the details of this scheme, and according to experts, quality consciousness is key to promoting Brand India.

Through the India Brand Equity Foundation, a trust established by the commerce ministry, the government is promoting and creating international awareness about the “Made in India” label in overseas markets and facilitating the dissemination of knowledge of Indian products and services.
