OpenAI nears GPT-5 launch, promising big leap in capability

OpenAI is preparing to launch GPT-5 as early as August, in what could be its most cohesive step yet toward unifying capabilities across its AI portfolio, The Verge has reported, citing people familiar with the company’s plans.

The upcoming model will merge OpenAI’s o-series reasoning technology into its core GPT-series architecture. It will be available in multiple variants—main, mini, and nano—delivered through ChatGPT and API channels. The smallest version, nano, will be API-only.

CEO Sam Altman has offered glimpses of GPT-5’s power in public forums, including a podcast with comedian Theo Von.

Describing a recent interaction with the model, Altman said GPT-5 answered a question he couldn’t, calling it a “here it is moment.”

The exchange left him feeling “useless relative to the AI,” he added.

OpenAI has not formally confirmed a release date. However, internal testing of GPT-5 is reportedly complete, and server provisioning, led in part by Microsoft engineers, began in May, The Verge noted.

That aligns with earlier signals, including sightings of the model in use, which stirred speculation of an imminent debut.

Altman previously described GPT-5 as a “system that integrates a lot of our technology,” underscoring its consolidation of reasoning and language capabilities.

The design shift is meant to reduce user friction by eliminating the need to choose between specialized models for different tasks.

Before GPT-5’s release, OpenAI is also expected to unveil a new open-weight model by the end of July.

This model, similar in scale to the o3 mini, will offer reasoning capabilities and be hosted on platforms like Azure and Hugging Face. It will mark the company’s first open-weight release since GPT-2 in 2019.

Despite the anticipation, GPT-5 is not expected to cross the threshold into artificial general intelligence (AGI), a benchmark that, if achieved, would require Microsoft to forgo certain rights to OpenAI’s profits and models under their partnership terms.

Altman has acknowledged that GPT-5 will need “many months” after launch before it reaches anything approaching “gold level” performance.

The company is also navigating internal safety reviews and competitive pressures.

Its open-weight release was recently delayed for additional risk assessments, and similar factors could still influence GPT-5’s launch timeline.
