Shōgun, The Bear shine at the 2024 Emmy Awards
The network’s The Bear continued its reign from last year, securing 11 awards after receiving a record-breaking 23 nominations
Disney’s FX dominated the top honors at the 76th Annual Emmy Awards for the second year in a row.
The network’s The Bear continued its reign from last year, pocketing11 awards after receiving a record-breaking 23 nominations, while Shogun broke the record for most wins by a show in a single season, after winning 14 awards at the Creative Arts Emmys and winning another four last night, bringing the total to 18 for the Japanese historical drama.
A mere eight months after the previous ceremony that was delayed due to the writer’s strike, Hollywood’s elite came together to honor the best in television, in a ceremony hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy.
Top honors of the night went to The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White who won the trophy for the best actor in a comedy series and to his on-screen frenemy in the acclaimed Chicago-set dramedy, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, for the best supporting actor.
Liza Colón-Zayas also earned a best supporting actress award for her performance in the show.
However, the biggest upset of the night came when Hacks snatched the best comedy series award, despite The Bear’s strong lead-up.
Some fans speculated that the release of the show’s third season in June may have influenced the voter’s perceptions, resulting in the upset, even though The Bear had been a frontrunner throughout the awards season, garnering widespread praise and record-breaking nominations.
However, Hacks, the tale of two dysfunctional comics, managed to steal the show with its poignant exploration of age, aspiration, and showbiz insecurity.
In accepting the award, the Hacks’ team expressed their belief in comedy’s power to bridge divides and emphasized the importance of representation for older actors.
In the drama department, Shogun swept the best drama series award and actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai took home the best actor and actress in a drama awards, while Frederick EO Toye won the prize for the best director.
Netflix’s viral seven-episode miniseries Baby Reindeer, an unexpected hit, brought multiple awards for the streaming service as it won the prize for the best limited series or anthology, and the relatively unknown comic and creator Richard Gadd won the awards for best lead actor as well as writing, while his co-star Jessica Gunning won the prize for the best supporting actress.
Legendary actress Jodie Foster also earned her first Emmy award — as well as the first award for an actor in the True Detective franchise — for her performance in True Detective: Night Country.
