HCL Technologies Ltd has topped this year’s Time’s list of world’s best companies based out of India, topped overall by Apple.

The ranking is based on employee-satisfaction surveys, revenue growth, and environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) data, the magazine said.

Apple “earned strong marks” from employees, coming in fourth in employee satisfaction, but was propelled to the top of the rankings by its ESG rating, which was first out of all the companies.

The tech giant has committed to being carbon neutral by 2030 and is making more products with recycled materials; in early 2024, it also became the first big tech company to achieve gender equality on its board of directors, now composed of four men and four women, Time said.

Though no one sector dominated the list, tech firms made up six of the top 20 positions and four of the top 10.

Microsoft, for instance, which came in third in the rankings, was the second highest-rated company in employee satisfaction, after Alphabet, the parent company of Google.

Microsoft has said it tries to ensure that employees are thriving, which it defines as “energized and empowered to do meaningful work,” an approach that seems to be working both at keeping employees happy and at powering revenue.

In comparison, HCL Tech was ranked 112th on the list with an overall score of 91.75. The tech firm was ranked 76th on ESG and 243rd on employee satisfaction.

The other Indian companies that made it to the top 200 on the Times list were Infosys, Wipro, and Mahindra Group. Infosys was 119th with an overall score of 91.55, Wipro was 134th with 91.29, and Mahindra Group was 187th with 90.57.

In terms of employee satisfaction rank, Infosys won 75th place, Wipro was 182th, and Mahindra Group was 305th.
