RMZ, a global alternative asset owner, and Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS), a hyperscale data center operator, announced on Tuesday a joint venture (JV) to invest $1.7 billion (Rs 14,110 crore) to develop digital infrastructure in India.

The JV will focus on expanding data center capacity in existing sites in Navi Mumbai and Ambattur, Chennai. A third site is planned for future development, Colt DCS said in a statement.

The combined capacity of the data centers will reach approximately 250 megawatts upon completion of all phases.

“In terms of our expansion India remains a strategic country of focus and key in terms of delivering against our aggressive growth strategy. Colt DCS has a proven track record, working with the world’s largest hyperscale cloud providers and multi-national companies,” said Colt DCS chief executive Niclas Sanfridsson.

What is hyperscale?

Hyperscale refers to the design and operation of data centres that can support massive levels of data processing and storage. These centres are built to scale up quickly, accommodate global cloud service demands, and handle the vast needs of technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-speed computing. Operators like Colt DCS specialize in these facilities, serving hyperscale cloud providers and multinational enterprises.
