US-based pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Co has announced plans to open a global capability center in Hyderabad.

The facility will be named Lilly Capability Centre India (LCCI) Hyderabad and is expected to start operations by mid-2025.

The center will employ between 1,000-1,500 skilled professionals for which recruitment is underway, the company said.

“LCCI Hyderabad will enhance our technical capabilities, enabling us to better meet growing business demands, fully leverage technology in our operations, and further expand our presence in India,” Manish Arora, managing director, LCCI Hyderabad, said in a statement.

Areas of work will be automation, artificial intelligence, software product engineering, and cloud computing, potentially helping improve Lilly’s digital strategies and support its global business operations, the company said.

Lilly’s executive vice-president and chief information and digital officer, Diogo Rau, said “Hyderabad has a reputation for technological innovation,” and the LCCI Hyderabad will bring together skilled professionals to develop tools and technologies addressing global health challenges.

“Lilly will establish their global capability center here, which underscores Hyderabad’s growing reputation as a hub for healthcare innovation and talent. We fully support Lilly’s vision..and are confident that this center will contribute significantly to the local economy and help improve health globally,” Sridhar Babu Duddilla, Telangana state industries and IT minister, said.

The center in Hyderabad will be Lilly’s second such unit in India, with the first being launched in Bengaluru in 2016.
