Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has launched the ‘Made In India’ Jimny 5-door in Japan, the company said on Thursday.

This model of the iconic off-roader was first put up on display at the Auto Expo 2023 in India.

The Jimny is now the second most exported Maruti Suzuki vehicle in the current fiscal year.

The Jimny 5-door is manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurugram plant in Haryana, has a strong legacy as a global 4-wheel drive sport utility vehicle (SUV), and is already being exported to nearly 100 countries, the company said.

The Jimny is the second SUV, after the Fronx, to be shipped to Suzuki’s home market in the financial year to March.

“The introduction of ‘Made in India’ Jimny 5-door in Japan is a testament to the global level of excellence in our manufacturing capability. … After its resounding success in markets like Mexico, Australia, and South Africa, we are confident that it will delight customers in Japan. The export of Jimny reaffirms our commitment towards ‘Make-in-India for the world,’” Hisashi Takeuchi, managing director and chief executive officer of Maruti Suzuki India, said in a statement.

The Jimny has been a popular model for more than 50 years, with more than 3.5 million units sold across 199 countries and regions.

While Japan has already been familiar with the 3-door version, the new 5-door variant is expected to further its popularity.

With India as the production base, Suzuki plans to meet growing global demand for this legendary off-roader.
