US vice-president J.D. Vance will be in India next week on an official visit to discuss economic and geopolitics priorities with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The visit comes against the backdrop of the ongoing global trade disruptions triggered by the Donald Trump administration’s tariff policy.

The visit is part of a seven-day trip from 18 to 24 April, which includes official engagements in Italy and India.

In India, Vance is expected to meet Modi on 21 April to discuss bilateral relations, including the tariff issue and ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement.

Vance will be travelling with his wife Usha, and their three children—Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel.

The Second Family will visit New Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, where they are also expected to participate in cultural engagements.

A spokesperson for Vance said he will first travel to Rome to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

His schedule in Italy includes participation in Easter-related ceremonies.

Vance’s visit to India comes after a recent trip by US director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who held meetings with top echelons including Modi, defense minister Rajnath Singh, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar, and national security adviser Ajit Doval.

While Trump recently announced a 90-day pause on the tariffs for all countries except China, the move has already had widespread economic impact.

The India-US bilateral trade agenda gained momentum after Modi and Trump met in Washington in February. Both sides agreed to work on finalizing the first phase of a bilateral trade deal by the fall of this year.
