Ahmedabad has been confirmed as host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games after Commonwealth Sport, the governing body of the Games, formally approved India’s bid at its General Assembly in Glasgow.

Delegates from the member nations and territories voted in favor of awarding the centenary edition to Ahmedabad, clearing the final procedural step and placing the city ahead of rival Abuja, Nigeria, sealing India’s return as host two decades after the Delhi 2010 edition.

The decision gives the Games a centenary anchor in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets at a time when the event has struggled to find stable hosts.

Commonwealth Sport said the vote marked a reset after years of withdrawals and funding crises, adding that India’s bid offered “scale, relevance and long-term certainty.”

The 2030 edition, branded “Amdavad 2030,” will be built around a compact cluster spanning Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which includes the Narendra Modi Stadium, and the Karai Sports Hub will form the competition core, with most venues located within a short radius.

Organizers expect opening and closing ceremonies at the cricket venue, the world’s largest by capacity.

India has signaled it will push for a broader sports program than recent editions, with shooting, wrestling, badminton, hockey and T20 cricket among likely proposals.

Commonwealth Sport has locked in athletics, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, bowls and artistic gymnastics, with space for optional and Para events.

India is expected to continue lobbying for the reinstatement of shooting, which was controversially dropped from Birmingham 2022.

For New Delhi, hosting the 2030 Games is also part of a wider strategy to position Ahmedabad as the centerpiece of a future bid for the 2036 Olympics.

The Games will act as a full-scale trial for India’s ambitions in large multi-sport events, testing venue readiness, transport integration and hospitality capacity.

Officials said construction timelines would run from 2026 to late 2028, backed by metro expansions, upgraded airport infrastructure and new accommodation tied to long-term sports education plans.

The city is positioning itself for a significant economic lift. Planners expect tourism and hotel demand to spike during the Games, with estimates of at least 20,000 star-category rooms needed across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

State officials said more than 30,000 jobs will be created during venue development and event operations, building on a sports-driven investment push that has gathered pace over the past five years.

India’s leadership cast the announcement as a vote of confidence in the country’s ability to manage mega-events after the handling of Delhi 2010 drew global scrutiny.

The Gujarat government stressed that a majority of competition sites already exist within established enclaves, reducing the risk of last-minute overruns.

A vision document presented in Glasgow emphasized a compact Games footprint, minimal intra-city travel for athletes, and lower emissions relative to past multi-city editions.
