JSW Steel USA, a subsidiary of India’s JSW Steel Ltd acquired in 2007, plans to invest $110 million in modernizing its steel plate mill in Baytown, Texas, the company said this week.

The project aims to boost domestic production of high-quality monopile steel slabs for renewable energy and infrastructure sectors, further expanding its “Made in USA” portfolio by insourcing production from its Ohio facilities at Mingo Junction, the company added.

JSW USA’s new projects, which follow a recent $145 million investment to upgrade “clean steel” manufacturing at its Mingo Junction facility, are expected to be completed and commissioned by FY26, the company stated in the release.

The company said its production plan supports the US administration’s initiatives to expand offshore wind energy, aiming for 30 gigawatts (GW) by 2030—enough to power 10 million homes with clean energy.

This expansion enhances the company’s capacity to serve customers in the offshore wind market, the company said.

Parth Jindal, director of JSW Steel USA, said, “The new investments at our Baytown, Texas, facility reinforce JSW USA’s commitment to a sustainable and green future.”

“The new upgrades at our plate mill support the long-term ESG initiative of JSW USA and the decarbonization of the energy spectrum. The new investments will enable us to deliver high-quality steel products progressively while further defining our niche markets through a Made in America specialty steel portfolio. These investments have the potential to significantly reduce U.S. import reliance in the infrastructure and renewable energy sectors,” he added.

Rob Simon, CEO of JSW Steel USA, said, “JSW’s continued investment in its Baytown facility and enduring partnership with the state of Texas reflects the company’s ethos of ‘Better Every Day.’ JSW is committed to a cleaner, greener, and better tomorrow by supplying the critical high-grade steel products for US offshore wind deployment.”

Ambassador Atul Keshap, president of the US-India Business Council, said, “JSW Steel’s investment and focus on sustainability and next-generation energy production is an impressive example of private sector-led development and critical infrastructure creation. The state of Texas’ pro-business environment is a model for growth across the country, and I commend JSW Steel’s commitment to prosperity in both our great nations.”

JSW Steel acquired the plate and pipe mill in Baytown, Texas, in 2007. In 2018, it announced plans to invest $500 million to expand its operations in the US, including acquiring and modernizing steel manufacturing facilities.

JSW Steel is the flagship business of the diversified, $24 billion JSW Group. Leading Indian business houses, JSW Group also has interests in energy, infrastructure, defense, cement, realty, paints, e-commerce, sports, green mobility, and venture capital. JSW Steel USA, Inc. is a subsidiary of JSW Steel.

Over the last three decades, JSW Steel has grown from a single manufacturing unit to become India’s leading integrated steel company with a capacity of 29.7 million tons per annum in India and the US.
