The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) broke into the top 150 of the QS World University Rankings list for 2025, jumping 31 places from last year to become the top-ranked Indian institution, while securing the 118th spot globally.
IIT-Delhi rose to the 150th place, up 47 spots from last year, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore climbed 14 ranks to 211th.
Further down the list were IIT-Kharagpur (222nd), IIT-Madras (227th), IIT-Kanpur (263rd), and University of Delhi (328th).
The University of Delhi registered the most significant improvement out of the Indian universities, climbing 79 ranks up from 407th last year.
Other universities ranked in the top 500 were IIT-Roorkee (335), IIT-Guwahati (344), Anna University in Chennai (383), and IIT-Indore (477).

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) secured the top spot for the 13th consecutive year.
The list, comprising 1,503 institutions, showed the US leading with 197 universities, followed by the United Kingdom with 90, and mainland China with 71.
Imperial College London made a significant leap, climbing four positions to claim second place behind MIT, while the universities of Oxford and Harvard followed closely behind in third and fourth, respectively. The University of Cambridge completed the top five.
The QS World University Rankings, according to the website, consider many factors like the
range of subjects and degree levels offered by an institution, along with its teaching
methods.
Three new metrics were introduced for this year’s list alongside existing ones, and the
weightage of some existing factors was adjusted. Sustainability, employment outcomes for
graduates, and the international research network were given greater emphasis as the
research methodology behind the list evolved for the first time in twenty years.
