UK cybersecurity czar Lindy Cameron will become the first woman to take charge as the British High Commissioner to India.

The UK’s Foreign Common Wealth Development office said Cameron will replace Alex Ellis, who will head to Spain.

“Immensely proud to be appointed the next British High Commissioner to India—huge thanks to Alex Ellis for leaving an amazing legacy. I look forward to working with the fantastic British High Commission in India team. I can’t wait to get started!” Cameron said in a post on LinkedIn.

Cameron will take up her new appointment this month.

Before her new appointment, Cameron was chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in the UK for four years. The UK has not announced her replacement at the NCSC.

As NCSC chief, Cameron visited India in February last year and had held discussions with Indian academics, businessmen, and government representatives on shared opportunities and challenges ahead in cyberspace.

Cameron has served in several leadership roles and was posted in Afghanistan for nine years. She has also worked as a governance adviser in Hanoi, Lagos, and the Balkans.

Cameron’s appointment comes ahead of the Indian general election that is scheduled to be held between 19 April to 1 June. New Delhi is also ironing out some last remaining differences for a free trade agreement with London.
