Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for a two‑day official visit aimed at jumpstarting a recalibration of India–Canada relations strained by past tensions.

Her agenda spans trade diversification, security cooperation, and high‑tech partnerships, signaling Ottawa’s intent to recast its strategic posture in the Indo‑Pacific.

The timing is sensitive. Diplomatic ties had soured following Canadian allegations that agents of the Indian state were linked to the 2023 killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, a claim New Delhi strongly denied.

The decades‑old bilateral partnership, anchored in trade, diaspora links and multilateral collaboration, has endured deep stress.

Anand’s trip forms a key pillar of Canada’s new Indo‑Pacific Strategy, pushing to reforge bridges with major Asian partners.

During her India leg, Anand met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar and commerce minister Piyush Goyal, before leaving for Mumbai to interact with business groups.

In remarks delivered as part of her official itinerary, the Indian foreign ministry highlighted that bilateral relations are “steadily progressing,” and noted that both sides are working to restore and reinvigorate existing mechanisms to advance cooperation.

During the meeting with Modi, Anand was briefed on India’s vision for collaboration across trade, technology, clean energy, and critical minerals.

Anand’s office, in a Canada government release, said the visit from 12 to 17 October covers engagements in India, Singapore and China.

In New Delhi, key themes were strategic cooperation, energy transition, trade diversification and security.

In Mumbai, she was scheduled to meet with Indian and Canadian firms in a push for joint investment, job creation, and economic opportunity.

The visit comes amid concerted steps toward diplomatic reset.

In August, both countries appointed new high commissioners in Christopher Cooter for Canada in India and Dinesh Patnaik for India in Canada, after more than a year of vacated top diplomatic posts.

Those appointments were among the first visible markers of thaw following the rupture triggered by the Nijjar controversy.

Analysts said Anand’s visit seeks to lay groundwork, not immediate breakthroughs. It signals Canada’s willingness to reset, and India’s cautious openness to engage.

Canada views India as a key pivot in its Indo‑Pacific approach, while New Delhi is reasserting a posture of strategic autonomy.

Canada has emphasized that reopening diplomatic engagement is central to its economic and trade goals.

In FY 2024–25, two‑way trade with India stood at about $8.6 billion, making India one of Canada’s top trading partners globally.

The business leg in Mumbai, scheduled later in the visit, will test the appeal of bilateral deals and industrial linkages.

New Delhi views the reset as cautious but promising. In remarks welcoming Anand, external affairs minister Jaishankar recalled efforts over recent months from meetings of foreign ministries and national security advisers to discussions on restoring bilateral mechanisms.

“We are working to restore and reinvigorate the mechanisms necessary to advance our partnership,” he said. He also referenced prior conversations between Modi and Carney as laying a “positive mindset” foundation.

Anand’s India stop will also dovetail with parallel diplomacy in Singapore and China, as Canada repositions its foreign policy vectors toward Asia.
