India clears $630 million electronics push to cut imports

Five of seven approved component plants will be built in Tamil Nadu and are meant to localise PCBs, camera modules and copper-clad laminates, cover up to 20% of domestic PCB demand and create more than 5,100 direct jobs.

India has cleared seven electronics component manufacturing projects with a combined investment outlay of ₹5,532 crore, or about $630 million, spanning five plants in Tamil Nadu and one each in Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Electronics and Information Technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said these plants will meet about 20% of India’s domestic demand for printed circuit boards (PCBs) and 15% of camera module sub-assembly once they start production.

He said India’s entire demand for copper-clad laminate will now be sourced domestically, and roughly 60% of total output from these units is expected to be exported. The approvals are the first batch under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS).

The facilities will make multilayer and high-density interconnect (HDI) printed circuit boards, camera modules, copper-clad laminates and polypropylene films, all of which sit deep in the electronics supply chain for sectors such as telecom, defense, electric vehicles and renewable energy.

Kaynes Circuits India, a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology, will run four of the seven approved projects in Tamil Nadu with a planned investment of ₹3,280 crore. The units will make multilayer printed circuit boards, high-density interconnect printed circuit boards, camera module sub-assemblies and copper-clad laminates.

Ascent Circuits, part of Amber Group, will invest ₹991 crore in Tamil Nadu to build a multilayer printed circuit board plant. Syrma Strategic Electronics, a subsidiary of Syrma SGS Technology, will invest ₹765 crore in Andhra Pradesh for a multilayer printed circuit board facility. SRF Ltd. will invest ₹496 crore in Madhya Pradesh to make polypropylene film used in capacitors for electronics.

Together, the seven projects are expected to produce components worth ₹36,559 crore, or about $4.2 billion, and create more than 5,100 direct jobs.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme has drawn 249 applications so far, with proposed investments of about ₹1.15 trillion and projected output of ₹10.34 trillion.

The scheme itself was approved with a total outlay of ₹22,919 crore, or roughly $2.6 billion, and is designed to cut import dependence and build domestic capacity in strategic components.
