This is the first formal meeting between both the leaders after a gap of almost five years. Both leaders last met in Brazil in November 2019 on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
Wednesday meeting comes days after both countries agreed on patrolling arrangement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which will lead to the disengagement of troops.
PM Modi said that India believes that the importance of India-China relations is not just for people from both countries but, “Our (India-China) relations are also important for global peace, stability and progress.”
Hong Kong based newspaper South China Post reported that Chinese President reportedly told PM Modi that both countries should manage their differences properly. Jinping reportedly told PM Modi that both sides need to have more communication and cooperation, properly handle differences and disagreements, and facilitate each other’s pursuit of development aspirations, mentioned the newspaper.
During his meeting with Modi, the Chinese President said, “It is also important for both sides to shoulder our international responsibilities, set an example for boosting the strength and unity of developing countries, and contribute to promoting multi-polarization and democracy in international relations.”
Both leaders have agreed to schedule the next round of special representative-level talks at an appropriate date to ensure peace and tranquility at the border. They also reviewed the state of bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective.
Indian ministry of external affairs spokesperson said that both leaders expressed that stable bilateral relations between India and China would positively impact regional and global peace and prosperity.
